Addiction and Codependency

Addiction is a very complicated brain disease. Many of us are naturally prone to look at an addict and say, “Wow, he doesn’t care about his family,” and “What a loser,” or “She’s so irresponsible”.  These words are hurtful and show that most people do not understand what happens in the brain with addiction.

We are eager to help those with addiction issues because addiction robs so many including young people of their destiny.  Alcoholics Anonymous considers addiction an allergy of the body and an obsession of the mind.

Negative themes and the relationship- “ I with the Higher Power”

It is my prayer that you carefully consider what this blog is saying. I believe the following to be true about you.  Believing this could change your life.  Test it out.

When it comes to negative thoughts and themes of worthlessness, unimportance, and inadequacy, we transfer our negative themes into the “I with the Higher Power” relationship. This concept has repeatedly revealed itself for almost ten years in counseling.  If you did not figure out your negative theme yet then go to the October 2013 blog and answer the 7 questions.

Transformation- the key to your dreams coming true

Deep down inside we all have dreams. Some of us know what they are yet worry they may never come true.  Others have dared“to believe”like the familiar song says, ‘Dream on, dream on, dream it till your dreams come true,’yet have seen no results.  Dreams will NOT manifestuntil... THE MIND IS TRANSFORMED.

We can dream and believe until the cows come home but things will not happen until the transformation of the mind occurs. You do not have to continue to spin on a hamster wheel; you are powerful!

Key to self love is to identify self hatred

Now is the time to begin loving yourself!

Reflecting upon the holidays shows me that many of us are feeling the need to perform. Performance is when a person behaves in a particular way for another group of people.  The phone ringing off the hook for counseling proves all the anxiety exhibited during this time.  The reason for so much performance is because we consider our true self as unworthy.

The fear of intimacy is a big indicator that a person does not have love for himself.

Depression, Anxiety and Anger

BELIEF

Anger -is an outward expression of a belief I cannot handle.

Anxiety- is a nervous expression of a belief I cannot handle.

Depression- is an inward expression of a belief I cannot handle.

What is the belief that you cannot handle?

2 Types of Beliefs-

1.     Core Belief - (often your negative theme) example “I am worthless.”

2.     Situational Belief - example “

Discover your negative theme

What is a negative theme?

 3 Examples:

1.A little girl comes to counseling to say she feels badly because her whole life her mom told her she wished she had never been born. This little girl may grow up feeling worthless because the opinion of a mom or dad can seem like fact.  When she is older she may continue to think others see her as worthless. This is called a worthless theme.  Although she feels this way the good news is that she is not worthless.

The Promise Land- Is it real?

What we are doing at Dream, Believe Transforming Lives Counseling reminds me of the Israelites and the Promise Land in the Old Testament. The journey to go from Egypt through the wilderness to the Promise Land was meant to be an eleven day journey.

Egypt reminds me of what we are comfortable with, our child hood script.  Just like the Israelites were slaves in Egypt we are often slaves to our childhood script. The Israelites begged their leader to go back to Egypt.

The wilderness reminds me of counseling where we are trying to sort out the lies from the truth.

When someone is reacting its about them.

When someone is reacting it's about them! Their reaction has to do with a belief they cannot handle.  The next time someone is angry at you, tell yourself when someone is reacting it is about them.  What could it be that they are feeling? Think of their reaction this way and It will change the way you look at them.

Its all about what you believe

3 Common ways a person presents they have a belief that they can't handle!

Depression- an inward expression of a belief I cannot handle
Anxiety- a nervous expression of a belief I cannot handle
Anger- an outward expression of a belief I cannot handle

THE GOAL is to Identify the belief. Once the belief is identified then we will know what to do with the belief

If the belief is true you must make a BEHAVIORAL change to get a feeling change.
If the belief is a lie you must make a COGNITIVE (thinking) change to get a feeling change.
